Urgent Care vs. Emergency Room

For many health needs, urgent care may be the better choice

With an injury or illness, finding the right care can make all the difference. Urgent Care (UC) clinics are designed to handle a wide range of immediate medical concerns. A visit to UC can be quick, convenient, and often at a lower cost than an emergency room (ER) visit. Think of UC as the go-to for those unexpected moments when care is needed fast, but it’s not a life-threatening situation.

UC health conditions treated

  • Fever, chills, or body aches
  • Headaches or general pain
  • Colds, coughs, and other respiratory issues
  • Sprains, strains, or simple fractures
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

UC services offered

  • X-rays
  • Blood work
  • IVs and fluid therapy
  • EKGs
  • CT scans
  • Health monitoring
  • Sutures and wound care

UC benefits over the ER

  • Shorter wait times
  • Faster results – sometimes in as little as 15 minutes
  • Lower copays than a typical ER visit
  • Walk-in availability – no appointment needed

Don’t postpone an ER visit if necessary

If a condition is severe or life-threatening, the ER is the right place. Go to the ER for:

  • Poisoning or uncontrolled bleeding
  • Vaginal bleeding during pregnancy
  • Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body
  • Double vision or vision loss
  • Head injuries, confusion, seizures, or fainting

If it’s a true crisis, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room right away.
